How much does Etsy actually take from a sale?
Typically 9.5–10% of your gross sale (transaction fee + payment processing) plus a $0.20 listing renewal, before Offsite Ads. On a $30 sale with $6 shipping, that's usually $3–4 in fees — run your exact numbers in the calculator above.
Do I have to pay Etsy's Offsite Ads fee?
Only if a sale is attributed to an Offsite Ads click, and only shops earning under $10,000/year in the trailing 12 months can opt out entirely. Above that threshold, participation is mandatory at a reduced 12% rate.
What's the difference between the transaction fee and payment processing fee?
The 6.5% transaction fee is Etsy's cut for hosting the sale. The 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee is separate, charged for handling the actual payment. Both apply to every sale and are calculated on price plus shipping.
How often do I pay the Etsy listing fee?
Every 4 months per active listing, or immediately when it sells and needs to renew. A listing that sells 5 times in one order (5 units) triggers 5 separate $0.20 renewals, not one flat fee.
What's a healthy profit margin on Etsy after fees?
Most sellers aim for 30–50% after all fees, cost of goods, and shipping. Under 20% leaves little room for returns, ad spend, or supply cost increases — check your margin bar in the calculator above before listing.
Does Etsy charge fees on the shipping I charge buyers?
Yes — the transaction fee and payment processing fee are both calculated on price plus shipping charged, not just the item price. Overcharging for shipping increases your fees along with your revenue.
Is Etsy Plus worth the $10/month fee?
It depends on your sales volume — Etsy Plus includes shop customization tools, listing credits, and discounts that can offset the $10 for active shops. For very low-volume shops, the extras may not be worth it.
Why did my fees look different between two similar sales?
Usually shipping charged, Offsite Ads attribution, or order quantity. Two sales at the same item price can have very different total fees if one included more shipping or sold multiple units in one order.
