How Etsy Offsite Ads Actually Work
Most sellers don't fully understand what they're agreeing to. Here's the complete picture.
Mandatory Above $10K
If your Etsy shop earns more than $10,000 in a 365-day rolling period, offsite ads enrollment is permanent and cannot be opted out of. Etsy charges 12% on any sale attributed to an offsite ad — Google, Facebook, Pinterest, Bing, or display networks.
Optional Below $10K (at 15%)
Under the $10K threshold, offsite ads are opt-in — but the rate is 15%, not 12%. You can disable them in Etsy Shop Manager under Marketing → Offsite Ads. Many low-volume sellers benefit from opting out and driving their own traffic.
The Attribution Window
Etsy charges the offsite ads fee on any sale that happens within 30 days of a shopper clicking an offsite ad for your product. Even if they came back directly 3 weeks later, you still pay. The 30-day window makes attribution hard to predict.
No Cap Per Sale
Unlike some ad platforms, Etsy's offsite ad fee has no cap per sale. On a $500 custom order, the 12% fee is $60 — charged on top of all other Etsy fees. High-ticket sellers approaching the $10K threshold need to account for this specifically.
Etsy Offsite Ads — Questions Answered
Can I turn off Etsy offsite ads?
Yes, if your shop has earned under $10,000 on Etsy in the past 365 days. Go to Etsy Shop Manager → Marketing → Offsite Ads and toggle them off. If you've crossed the $10K threshold, you cannot opt out — participation becomes permanent and mandatory at the 12% rate.
How does Etsy determine if a sale came from an offsite ad?
Etsy uses a 30-day attribution window and last-click attribution model. If a shopper clicked on an Etsy ad on Google, Facebook, Pinterest, or other platforms within 30 days before purchasing, Etsy attributes the sale to offsite ads and charges the fee — regardless of how the customer actually arrived for the final purchase.
Is the offsite ads fee worth it for sellers?
It depends on your product type and price point. For impulse-buy items or low-margin products, the additional 12-15% fee can eliminate profit entirely. For higher-margin or higher-priced items, the additional sales volume can offset the cost. Use the calculator above to check your specific numbers before deciding.
What happens when I hit $10,000 in Etsy sales?
Once your shop reaches $10,000 in revenue over any rolling 365-day period, Etsy automatically locks you into offsite ads permanently at the 12% rate. There's no way to opt out after this point. Your rate does drop from 15% to 12% as a benefit of the higher sales volume.
How do I see which sales were from offsite ads?
In Etsy Shop Manager, go to Stats → Traffic Sources. You can see the percentage of your sales attributed to offsite ads. Your monthly Etsy bill will also itemize offsite ad fees separately from other fees, so you can track the exact cost each month.
